Do you provide mattress audits?

Yes. We can supply resources to enable your staff to conduct a mattress audit for free or we can supply a Macmed Healthcare specialist to conduct an audit as a paid service, which is then fully refundable against the purchase of replacement mattresses.

How important is the size and weight of my client when selecting a pressure care mattress?

Extremely!

At MacMed Healthcare we are committed to the prevention of pressure injury and a big part of managing pressure care is matching the right pressure care surface to the client’s needs. It is important to beware of the “one size fits all” claims of some mattress manufacturers, because in our opinion it is impossible for a frail adult or typical paediatric client weighing less than 60 kg to achieve optimal pressure care on a static mattress that is weight rated for a patient up to 200+ kgs.

For this reason we produce 5 different pressure care mattress models, designed for different patient sizes

  • Platinum Plus – suited to clients under 60kg, in the low-normal BMI range
  • Hospital Ultimate – suited to clients up to 150kg in the normal-overweight BMI range
  • Bariatric Standard– suited to clients under 250kg, in the obese BMI range
  • Bariatric Ultimate – suited to clients over 250kg
  • Spinal Deluxe – Suited to clients up to 150kg, that require a pressure care surface that is also supportive enough for self-transfer

All of our mattresses are safety rated to allow for any size individual, and will provide pressure care benefits, however to achieve optimal pressure care we recommend considering the Platinum Plus or Bariatric model where appropriate.

When considering which mattress to choose, it is important to factor in weight distribution. An individual in the normal or overweight BMI with a disproportionately large mid-section may be more suited to a Bariatric mattress.

Do we still have to re-position patients once they are on a Macmed mattress?

Absolutely yes!

The three golden rules of relieving pressure are MOVE, MOVE, MOVE! The patient should be encouraged to re-position as often a possible and assisted with this if there is any difficulty.

The best thing you can do to relieve pressure points is to change position frequently. However, for high risk patients you should also consider the use of additional equipment to further reduce pressure (Repose, Dermis Plus) completely offload anatomical risk areas (Repose, Macmed wedges) and reduce shear and friction on the skin (Parafricta)

What features do your mattresses have to assist with infection control?

Macmed mattresses are currently among the most chemically resistant pressure care surfaces available. Suitable to be surface sanitised many times over with a wide range of commonly used hospital grade sanitisers including:

  • Alcohol based disinfectants
  • Phenol based disinfectants
  • Disinfectants based on quaternary ammonium
  • Active chlorine based disinfectants (> 100 times 5000 ppm). Please always keep in mind to rinse the cover extensively with pure water after using chlorine.
  • Chloramine based disinfectants
  • Peroxyde based disinfectants

All Macmed Mattresses have a 2 part waterproof, breathable, cover and non-slip, vinyl base joined together with a 360 waterproof zip with waterfall flap covering and fully HF welded seams making it impermeable to fluids and micro debris. The interior mattress foams are also treated with UltraFresh, which is an internationally renowned, antimicrobial which  inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi.
